After announcing the #jillys52sockskal 2023 Knit-Along (see episode 3 for full details), I had a lot of people comment that they would like to join in, but are not planning to knit socks.
Crafting together in community is the whole goal here (well, that and working through some of our WIPs, of course!) so I wanted to add an extra "branch" to the KAL, so to speak. If you want to join in but are not focusing specifically on socks, you are most welcome! For those folks, please use the hashtag #jillys52challenge .
The Details:
- Everything about the 52 Socks challenge stays the same; this is just an expanded path to include more people, but the basic idea is the same:
- The idea is to craft / stash bust / make (etc.) 52 items in 2023! How you define this or break this down is totally up to you! Here are some ideas: finish 52 WIPs in 2023; use up 50 grams of yarn or fiber per week in 2023 (or any amount that feels right to you); use up 52 mini skeins in 2023; make 52 blanket squares (or hats, mittens, dishcloths, etc.) and on and on! The possibilities are really endless!
- This is a stress-free make-along! These aren't even rules; they are just guidelines to hopefully enhance your crafting journey a bit this year. Take what works for you, and dump the rest! :)
- Any craft is acceptable here; again, I just want this to be fun and not about rules! Feel free to include your knitting, crochet, spinning, weaving, cross stitch, sewing, quilting, embroidery, etc. I know many of us indulge in multiple crafts, so this might be a good way to get things done in any area where you have a lot of WIPs to work through.
- There will be prizes! This is an Instagram make-along, so the only thing you have to do to participate (and be eligible for prizes) is to post your WIPs, progress photos (or anything related to your specific goal) on Instagram using one (or both) of the hashtags.
- Please use the hashtag #jillys52challenge so that we can all find each other, and I can easily choose a winner for prizes!
- If you fall short and don't complete 52 items by the end of the year, that is okay! The goal is progress, not perfection. Oh, and fun; the goal is really to just have fun! Our completed items are the icing on the cake! :).
- There is no such thing as "falling behind." We all have busy lives and things are bound to come up that keep us from crafting and/ or achieving our goals. Crafting can be a place where we get to experience some joy in our lives, even in the midst of chaos, so allow yourself some breathing room. Be prepared to give yourself heaps of grace this year, and just have fun with the journey!
I am so excited to craft along with everyone, and knock out some serious WIPs!!!!
Thank you for watching episode 3! In this episode, we find out that I don't know the difference between Yosemite Sam and Yukon Cornelius! I also give the lowdown on the NEW 2023 Knit-Along I'm hosting! Scroll down for full details :)

52 SOCKS IN 2023 KAL!!!! #jillys52sockskal
- This KAL will focus on knitting 52 single socks in 2023; the goal is to finish ONE sock per week of the year!
- This is a NO-STRESS knit-along, so if you fall short and don't quite knit one sock per week, that is okay! We are aiming for progress not perfection. Do your best and have fun; the rest is for the birds!
- This KAL will be happening entirely on Instagram. If you wish to participate, please post pictures of your WIPs and FOs using the hashtag #jillys52sockskal .
- If possible, please post pictures of all socks you have completed for the KAL periodically throughout the year (you can do this as often as you like; weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, whatever works for you!)
- It is super important that you use the hashtag, as that is what I will be using to choose prize winners and also the only way we can find others participating in the KAL!
- Feel free to search the #jillys52sockskal hashtag to cheer on other participants and make new sock knitting friends!
- Socks can be knitted or crocheted.
- Socks can be ANY SIZE, using any kind of yarn and any kind of pattern.
- WIPs are totally welcome, as are new cast-ons!
- You can join at ANY TIME during the year! Since this is a year-long KAL, just jump in when you are ready to join, knit socks and use the hashtag, and you're in!
- PRIZES: Dana Rae Makes has generously offered some of her beautiful sock patterns as prizes and I will also be giving away some of my handmade project bags as well! I will be choosing 1 random winner per month for the duration of the KAL.

HOW I MAKE MY VANILLA SOCKS:
Cuff Down:
(For me; women's US shoe size 10): I use a 2mm needle and cast on 64 stitches. For cuff-down, I do 28 rows of 2x2 rib followed by an 82 row leg. I then do a traditional heel flap and gusset, followed by 70-75 rows on the foot, and a standard toe with Kitchener.
(For my husband men's US shoe size 12): I use a 2.5mm needle and cast on 72 stitches. I knit 28 rows of 2x2 ribbing for the cuff, followed by a 60 row leg. I then do a traditional heel flap and gusset, followed by approximately 87 rows on the foot, then a standard toe with Kitchener.
Toe Up:
For toe-up, I start with Judy's magic cast-on. Then I knit the toe to 64 stitches for me (72 for hubby), then do roughly 70-75 rows on the foot for me (87ish rows for my husband; depending on yarn/ gauge; I try them on as I go); Fish Lips Kiss heel; then 82 rows on the leg for me (60 rows for hubby); followed by 28 rows of a 2x2 rib cuff and Jeny's Super Stretchy Bind-Off.
